This is so funny, Lorrie! About the batteries; if the camera isn't on, the batteries should last more than a few weeks. It may be longer than you think, of course. Regarding the variety of hummingbird, I think that these were rufous hummingbirds. I wasn't sure. They are a different from the Anna's hummingbirds we have here.

Great catch with the camera. I admire all of you folks who are so good with your cameras. I few years back my son bought me a camera. I took some pictures and the next thing I knew he was giving me another new camera. I asked why and he told me the pictures were not so good with the last one. I asked him, "did you ever think it is the photographer?" Alas, after a few pictures with the newer camera....well, he's given up on buying me cameras. Ever the optimist, I just bought a new one...but to carry in my car. And every time I go to use it, the battery is dead!!!! So what's up with that...do batteries die just because a few weeks go by and no pictures have been taken? I guess so...this would be photographer just doesn't have the skills even though I know I have the eye. I need a cameraman!!!

Oh, and what type of humming bird is this. I don't believe I have ever seen one with such a rusty color.

What a comment!! Very informative also easy to understand. Looking for more such writeups!! Do you have a twitter or a facebook?
I recommended it on digg. The only thing that it's missing is a bit of speed, the pictures are appearing slowly. Nevertheless thank you for this blog.

Hi, Lorrie! I think you would enjoy it. It might be a little spendy to stay overnight, but you could probably find less expensive places in Angel's Camp,just down the hill ( as you know). I think once you get off main street, there are still some interesting older buildings and shops that aren't as trendy, but honestly, I think the "trendy" stuff they've done is pretty nice. That area is such a rich part of California's history you almost can't go wrong.

I enjoyed this adventure. I remember Murphys when it was still an old mining town with nothing to draw a tourist! We used to take drives up from Stockton and just explore. Maybe I should go take a look at it now. You wrote this like a story and it was very captivating and interesting!!!

I'm starting to think that Palimpsest is just too demanding a novel and it does scare people away.

I am similarly disappointed that Palimpsest did not make the ballot for the World Fantasy Awards. Also flummoxed and bemused. How could they overlook this one? (At least they nominated Caitlin Kiernan's The Red Tree.)

Well, when you do, please tell me. ("I can't define literary fiction," the prudish woman said, "but I know it when I see it.") If you're going to start reading science fiction, this wouldn't be a bad book to start with. There will be words and phrases that won't make sense at first, but it's no different than reading a Reverte historical novel. Bacigalupi will immerse you in his world. It's a good example of taking existing technology and attitudes and applying the "If this goes on. . ." approach.

I have no excuse for not reading this book... One day I'll get there. For whatever reason I'm still scared of sf.

My life long wish is to figure out what " Literary fiction" means.

Jeremy;

I stand corrected, and thank you for the information. I'll put an update on the post. Now I'm going to indulge my ignorance for a moment and ask if all SFWA members are required to read all the books, like the Academy does with movies for Oscar noms, or whether members just vote for the books that they personally thought was the best. If the entire membership has read the whole slate, I see your point.

I still think Windup Girl over Palimpsest is the traditional book over the risky one, but that is a not-unheard-of occurence in the history of awards.

Thanks again for your comment--and by the way, beautiful presentation of the book, too!
