Girl Sits on Sidewalk

Girl sits on sidewalk

Smoking a cigarette

Checking her phone.

Big smile from her perch

Between the pickup with the hitch

And the junk-filled trailer.

She smiles cigarette smoke at me

From between bright white teeth.

Tidy cap of black hair.

“I’m sure glad it’s not so hot!”

I say I’m glad, too.

Nail-bitten thumb

Skates over the lighted screen.

She likes my T-shirt.

“Have a good day,” I say.

She calls after me

The same.

A visitor to the neighborhood

Not like the woman two doors down,

Who wears flowered blouses

And frowns

When I feed the crows.

That’s a really interesting image, capturing a quiet moment with quite a bit going on in the background.
