Youth Leading Industry

You should read the whole article posted here at firedoglake.com, but here are some facts about workers under 35:

–One-third live at home with parents because with student loans and an uncertain economy, they can’t afford housing on their own. (Some of these folks are married couples).

–31% report no health insurance, up from 24% ten years ago. 79% of those without coverage say it’s because they can’t afford it or their employer does not offer it.

–31% are able to meet expenses and save a little. This is a 22% decrease from 1999.

–24% say they cannot meet their current monthly bills.

–70% do not have enough saved to cover two months’ worth of living expenses.

Politically, it is easy to see why Glen Beck had a hissy-fit over the bas relief in Rockefeller Center, the chariot with the youth guiding it:

–Young workers favor expansion of public investment over reducing the budget deficit by a 22-point margin. That’s kind of interesting, because they are the ones who will end up paying off that deficit. When given 16 possible long-term priorities to address the economy, young worker rated the following reductions– taxes, business regulation and government spending– in the bottom five.

–35% voted for the first time in 2008. Nearly 75% are paying attention! They keep tabs on government and public affairs.

–70% of those first time voters say they are confident that Obama is taking the country in the right direction.
