Week One:
A coalition of county groups is cheerleading the 350 Garden Project; 350 new food gardens in the county this summer. Healthy Eating, Active Living (HEAL); Health Access and the iGrow initiative are involved as well as Beginning Farmers.
This little garden is one of the 350. It’s on a major street in my home town. It attracted me for several reasons. First of all, I like the old 1930s vintage house it’s in front of, with its pitched roof and corbelled porch. This is the first raised bed I’ve seen made out of cinderblock. The same day I saw this one I came across two others and one had planted small plants in the open centers of the blocks, which was clever, but this still qualifies as the first. This small garden faces south so it should get plenty of sun.
I love the piece of driftwood they found and put up as a decoration.
There are some wonderful gardens in my neighborhood and even I have a few vegetables in the back yard and herbs in pots. This is someone who got interested because of the project, through, so it’s going to be interesting to follow. I think I’ll take weekly photos to chart the progress. If I find other interesting 350 gardens, I’ll post about them too. We’ll hope that I don’t get arrested for “stalking” their garden!
