What’s happened:

In 1849, Bronwyn accompanied her brother James and his fiance (and her friend) Leticia to Scarborough to prepare for the wedding.  While they were there, they stopped at the ruins of an old Catholic monastery and Lettie had a moment of superstitious panic. . . or was it a premonition?

Later, Lettie confided to Bronwyn that Lettie’s industrialist father had cut Lettie’s ne’er-do-well brother Ransome out of his will, and planned to leave his estate to James, once they were married.  A drunken Ransome and his mysterious friend Mr Roope showed up well after dark.  Much later, Ransome attacked Bronwyn in the library, but Roope intervened and sent the drunken young man away.

In the present, Holly told her magical Big Sister Allegra some of her concerns about the house.  Allegra took her comments seriously and attempted a remote viewing of the house, but was defeated by powerful magical wards.  There was conspicuous volcanic activity at Mt. Redoubt and Mt. Menapi, and a small earthquake in the Berkeley area.  Elias reported the discovery of another drained body.
